Happy November Saints!!!
The trees still are in showoff mode for their Creator and Thanksgiving’s spirit is in the air. Don’t you just love the changing of the seasons? There is never a need to be bored with nature with the many holidays for which we have been blessed. “Oh Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Thy name in all the earth, who hast displayed Thy splendor above the heavens!
As you come into church on Sabbath, do check out the food collection on the table in the lobby—compliments of the Pathfinder’s Halloween night food collection. The kids and staff did a great job! If you see one of them on Sabbath, be sure to give them a high-five!
This weekend is the first of the Sunnyside CBFM (Center for Bible, Faith, and Mission) weekends with Walla Walla University. This subject, with all of its contemporary issues, is one that no few asked that we address, and after much discussion with the team we are ready to go—“Sex and the Church.” While this weekend’s topic is not advised for young children, it is one that your teens and young adults need to be here for. Moms and Dads, if you have struggled with how to approach this subject with your kids, this weekend will give you the perfect format to have the subject professionally presented and it will set the stage for you to have follow-up talks with kids. As you can see from the individual presentation titles, this is going to come from a biblical perspective, and then we are going to look at how we apply these biblical principles to our modern society. We will also look at how this material applies to us personally. Again, here are the topics and times:
Friday, 7 pm; “Understanding the Gift of Human Sexuality”
Saturday, 3 pm; “The Sacred Nature of Sex”
Sunday, 10 am; “Issues of Christian Sexuality in a Modern Secular Environment”
Our presenters will be Dr. Dave Thomas, Dean of the School of Theology; Dr. Pam Cress, Dean of the School of Social Work and Sociology, and Dr. Julian Melgosa, Dean of the School of Education and Psychology.
Sabbath is also potluck Sabbath. Bring your best and we might remember to put a touch of fall and Thanksgiving into our dishes. The best food is always at an Adventist potluck. There will be a Sabbath School Counsel meeting to run concurrent with the dinner. If you are part of that group, watch for Dick Gingrich and he will direct you to the right room for the meeting.
Our Sabbath worship service will feature a valued and trusted friend to many of us, Dr. Dave Thomas with a sermon entitled, “A Long Obedience.” Having pastored for a number of years, Dave is an inspiring speaker and always brings a message from his heart and one that is timely. It will be unrelated in content to the CBFM topic in the other sessions.
There will still be Encounters at five o’clock, and at seven we will start the fall Week-of-Prayer meetings which will run through the entire week at the same time.
Sunday at three o’clock will feature Oregon Sinfonietta’s fall concert, and at seven we will continue the Week-of-Prayer hour.
Yes, a very busy week at Sunnyside! There are many more items that you will want to see the bulletin for; we have given you just a starter.
This would be a great weekend to bring a friend to church and the CBFM seminar.
With you in Christ,
Pastor Scott LeMert
