Happy Holidays Dear Church,
Depending on when you read this, it is just ten days until Christmas! We are about to go into the third weekend of “Christmas at Sunnyside.” We have labeled this third service as “classical Christmas”, as it will have the Sunnyside Chamber Orchestra to lead our worship along with Martha Natiuk on the organ.
The orchestra has chosen a seasonal selection of numbers, some of which will have a Jewish Hanukkah feel to them. I believe you will appreciate what they share with us in this worshipful season. Ron Benfield and Julie Smith will present our ministry of music.
The sermon is entitled, “Christmas for Rachael,” and we will look at the part of the story of the coming of the Magi that we often avoid or wish we could, and that is the deed of Herod I and the killing of the children of Bethlehem and surrounding areas. We will look at the vexing question as to why God would allow such a thing and how one might try to explain it to the weeping mothers (Rachael) who will not be comforted. By sending Jesus to Egypt, God preserved His own son—or did He? In the sermon we will tie together the cross with the first and second advents, for without the cross and the second advent, the first has no meaning.
Do remember the next Sabbath, Christmas Eve Day. We actually start Friday night with the 30th Annual Family Christmas at 7:00 p.m. Sabbath morning will begin with a Christmas brunch at 8:30 a.m., with Sabbath School at 10:00, and our main Christmas program at 11:15. There will be no first service. The brunch will be part potluck in that you are being asked to bring fruit, breakfast breads, and breakfast casseroles. Provided will be pancakes, eggs, drinks, etc. When you exit the sanctuary from the Christmas program, you will again be greeted in the lobby with a host of Christmas munchies—a gift to us from the Wescotts.
Again, it is urged to all who can this year to remember the coming Sunnyside Renovation project in your end of the year giving.
See you Sabbath, and please, invite a friend.
May God grant you His richest blessings during these holidays!!!
