Sunnyside Communiqué

Greetings Sunnyside!

Each Sabbath and at other meetings at Sunnyside, the cross of Christ is held to be the center of why we come together.  Our hymns, songs, readings, and prayers all rejoice in the story of Golgotha.  But we are just practicing for the real events to come in the heavens above.  We will forever be learning the depths of God’s love for us. Take a moment and contemplate the quote below from the book, The Great Controversy.

“The cross of Christ will be the science and the song of the redeemed through all eternity. In Christ glorified they will behold Christ crucified. Never will it be forgotten that He whose power created and upheld the unnumbered worlds through the vast realms of space, the Beloved of God, the Majesty of heaven, He whom cherub and shining seraph delighted to adore–humbled Himself to uplift fallen man; that He bore the guilt and shame of sin, and the hiding of His Father’s face, till the woes of a lost world broke His heart and crushed out His life on Calvary’s cross. That the Maker of all worlds, the Arbiter of all destinies, should lay aside His glory and humiliate Himself from love to man will ever excite the wonder and adoration of the universe. As the nations of the saved look upon their Redeemer and behold the eternal glory of the Father shining in His countenance; as they behold His throne, which is from everlasting to everlasting, and know that His kingdom is to have no end, they break forth in rapturous song: ‘Worthy, worthy is the Lamb that was slain, and hath redeemed us to God by His own most precious blood!’”  {GC 651.2}

Tomorrow Pastor Jonathan will lead our worship with a presentation entitled, “Time for ReNewal.”  (That’s not a typo; it’s a reference to our renovation motto.)  Our Advent Trombone Choir will be joining us as we come together to dedicate ourselves anew to the mission of Sunnyside.  We have chosen February as a time for each to consider the fire of our commitment to this mission—to tell the world, starting with ourselves and our local community, about the wonderful God of love we serve and of the power contained in the study of His written word.  Let’s make tomorrow a time of holy convocation!

Tomorrow will also be a special time for our children as it is time for another special Sabbath of worship for them in the Fireside Room during the time of second service.  The theme of tomorrow’s children’s church is “the love of God.”  Thank you Pastor Shirley!

Tomorrow afternoon (3:00 pm) there will also a memorial service for Galen Coffin, a longtime Portland resident and a very active person in the churches he attended and our Adventist outreach and community service endeavors.  At 5:00 pm, Encounters with God will feature the third and final presentation by Wayne Blakely, “From Same-Sex Attraction to Glorifying God in the Highest.”  The Romanian Prayer Meeting will be at 6:00 pm.

We are about one-third of the way towards our fundraising goal towards Phase I of ReNew Sunnyside.  Please, continue to consider your sacrifice towards this project.  The Finance Committee would like for us to not consider taking away from our monthly tithes and church budget offerings to make this happen.  This is a time for special sacrifice.  All of the regular costs of keeping Sunnyside going will need to be addressed as we move forward in this renovation project.  Please, give as God moves upon your hearts.

See you tomorrow,

Pastor Scott
