Sunnyside Communiqué

Hello Sunnyside Young Life!!!

Do you know how much energy 120 kids can generate in one night?  Well, it’s a lot.  Great kids from Sunnyside and the community at large!  This includes a number of families from last year’s SunnyCity at Ventura Park.

The activity began last week on Sunday when a team of volunteers came to Sunnyside to set up the church for this year’s VBS program.  And, what a job they did!  Wait until you see the church.  Now some of it will be down for Sabbath, but there will still be enough to tell you what it must have been like.

I don’t have a figure for the number of volunteers but I am guessing that we are looking at another one-hundred as well.  From the set-up, to the crafts, to the food preparation, to the skits, to the check-in staff, and add all of the deacons, group leaders, musicians, sound people, and I am still missing some.  It has been great!

By the way, did you notice that there was no VBS fundraiser?  That is because VBS is one of the things funded by our last November Outreach/Evangelism Banquet.  Thank you Sunnyside!

As I reflect on all that has happened, the following text comes to mind as a summation of our divine calling to do these things:

“Listen, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone.
And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children.
Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road,
when you are going to bed and when you are getting up.
Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders.”
(Deuteronomy 6:4-8 New Living Translation)

Inspiring words!  The culmination of VBS will be this Sabbath as the kids present their final act for the 2012 VBS; family church service with VBS kids participating in it. Tomorrow’s sermon will continue the thoughts about Daniel and challenge your thinking.  I do hope you can all come and be young at heart.

And talking about young life, come on Sunday to the church (11:00) to room 63 and celebrate the arrival of William Luther Lee Russell as he introduces his parents, Pastor Jonathan and Jaclyn Russell.

Now if I can turn to a little more of a somber note?  This weekend will also see Sunnyside host three memorial services.  They are:

Sabbath at 4:00 pm: Dr. Louis Erich
Sunday at 4:00 pm: Marilyn Null
Monday at 3:00 pm: Steve Monkin

Please come and give your support to these grieving families.

Do note that the church office will be closed Wednesday through Friday of this week.  Enjoy the Fourth of July, and come back next weekend for a special celebration of our Christian patriotic duty and a Sunnyside potluck.

Courage in the Lord,
