Feb 16 Communiqué & Announcements

(Need to jump straight to the News? Click Here!)

Dear Sunnyside Family,

I remember with fondness the weekend that Morris Venden came to Southern Adventist University for the School of Religion’s retreat weekend. Pastor Venden was known for his clear teaching on righteousness by faith, but the thing that I remember most was his way of using various stories and a folksy sense of humor that made difficult issues easier to talk about. It was only a brief weekend encounter, but his approach to his ministry made an impact on mine. After his passing last Sunday there is no doubt that the Adventist community will miss the wit and wisdom of Morris Venden. (Click to learn more about his memorial.)

In moments like these, I tend to reflect on the many people who have had an impact, big or small, on my spiritual journey. It’s a moment to reflect on all of the pastors, professors, friends and family who have helped to shape my thinking, challenge my ideas, and help me become a better Christian than I could have on my own. But it’s not just me. All of us have a whole list of people who have made a big difference in our lives. A week ago, Dave Allen challenged Oregon pastors to identify those who have made an impact on us, and let them know that their presence made a difference. Too often, it turns out, we are impacted by people who never know about the difference they made in a life.

As Dave challenged us, I’d like to pass the challenge on. Take some time this weekend to identify those people who have made a positive impact on your life. Then figure out a way to let them know that their presence was important to you.

Too often we wait for memorial services to communicate how much someone meant to us. Don’t wait. Let them know now. You may never know how your simple note can make a difference in their world.

Have a fantastic Sabbath!

Pastor Jonathan
