Merry Christmas Sunnyside, 2013!
In our Western projections of the birth of Christ, we have long tied the first Advent to a wintery scene. We tend to see Christmas as night, snow, cold, sleighs, chimneys, long scarves and coats, ice skates, and more. Imagine if you will, celebrating Christmas in equatorial areas or in those lands in the Southern Hemisphere? Yes, Christmas might just be in the middle of summer. In reality, Jesus was probably born in the spring. In truth, we don’t know “when.”
The story of Christmas rests in the message,
“Look! The virgin will conceive a child!
She will give birth to a son,
and they will call him Immanuel,
which means ‘God is with us.’”
So, Christmas is really about God being made flesh and dwelling among us. “In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.” He is the “Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.”
Christmas then is the celebration of God with us, of life, of spiritual light, and of hope. But how do you define “hope?” What exactly is it? That is the topic of the first of our four Christmas Sabbaths starting this weekend.
Meanwhile, come with a song in your heart, a joy on your lips, and with love in your hands.
See you Sabbath,
Pastor Scott & Staff
