Greetings to Wonderful Members of Sunnyside!
Dorothy and I are back in town after being gone for four days to Idaho assisting in leading out for their pastors’ and teachers’ retreat at the beautiful Camp Ida-Haven on Payette Lake. I gave thirteen hours of presentation time. While feeling a little wearied, the time with the Idaho team went very well; the study of God’s word never ends poorly!
As the summer winds get ready to turn into the fall colors in the next weeks, Sunnyside is going to start picking up the paces. August 24, will be the annual Corn Feed, Picnic, and car show, and the next weekend will be our annual ReUnion Sunnyside with Bobby McGhee and many guests. While the Adventist softball tournament is more than thirty years old, this is the fourth year that we have invited the members of the thirty-six teams to join us for worship. This year we will have as our guest speaker, retired Oregon ministerial secretary and Montana and Arizona conference president, Herman Bauman. Add to the list, special Adventist organist, Ed Wagner, and then add the former Lincoln City and Medford pastor, later ministerial secretary for the Arizona Conference, and just newly elected Nevada Conference President, Ed Keys, who will be doing a special presentation in the sanctuary during Sabbath School time. The annual concert with these in-town guests will be in the evening.
And don’t forget that on Sunday, September 14, we will host our second annual 5K Run and Health Expo. Watch for details!
Pathfinders: they’re having a great time and will be headed home from Oshkosh on Sunday.
This Sabbath: Worship at Sunnyside in song, music, prayer, and word, will focus on Paul’s letter to the Colossians with a sermon address entitled: “When the Fullness of Deity Dwells Within.”
See you Sabbath,
News & Notes
Sabbath worship services are at 8:45 and 11:15 am. Pastor Scott LeMert will be bringing us our Bible message entitled “When the Fullness of Deity Dwells Within.”
Penny’s Puppets will be here this afternoon at 4:00 pm. All families with children are invited (even if you don’t have children, you will enjoy it)! Penny has been educating and igniting children’s imagination and filling them with excitement for over ten years. The kids saw her at Gladstone Camp Meeting this year and she was here for Adventurers last year.
The honor of your presence is requested at the wedding of Karista Hendrickson and Daniel Bradley tomorrow, Sunday, August 17, 2:00 pm, here at Sunnyside Church. Light refreshments will follow.
Our Annual Sunnyside Picnic featuring roasted corn on the cob, watermelon, and a classic car show will be Sunday, August 24, 3:30 pm. Bring your favorite veggie hotdogs for grilling and picnic foods: salads, finger foods, casseroles, entrees, or desserts. We will enjoy our new “Gathering Plaza.” You may want to bring some lawn chairs and if you have canopies for shade, bring those along. We will feature the “Classic Car Show.” If you have any old vehicles you would like to display, contact Lloyd at 503-252-0165.
Sabbath, August 30, our Bible message will be presented by Herman Bauman, friend of many in the Northwest, former ministerial director of the Oregon Conference, past president of Montana and Arizona Conferences, also known as “the Pastors’ Pastor.” Ed Wagner will be at the organ. He has provided music for us before, and has played with the Belko Brass. At 6:30 pm the 12th Annual Bobby McGhee and Friends Vespers will be right here at Sunnyside. Stark Street pizza follows vespers.

Mission . . . a Sunnyside Tradition
Water for Ethiopia Adventist College,
A new school for the children of Awassa
Ethiopia Adventist College could have a functioning water system next spring if Sunnyside’s Foreign Mission Facilitation Committee’s plans come to fruition.
And children in the village nearby could be learning in a new school.
These are just two of the major projects high on the list of activities during the church’s mission to Ethiopia March 21-April 5, 2015.
So you’re not a hydrologist or a construction engineer? Then how about these jobs:
* Missionaries skilled in electronics could be very busy upgrading EAC’s computer lab–which serves both college and secondary students.
* Medical-dental-nursing personnel would provide enhanced outpatient services at the on-campus clinic.
* Pathfinder vets would help South Ethiopia Field Pathfinders get used to new locally-made uniforms gifted by Sunnyside.
* Members of Sunnyside’s mission team would join with residents in and around Awassa and Sodo in ministries for women and children.
* And everyone would have multiple opportunities to participate in weekend mini-camp meetings and other worship services.
The 16-day period next March and April was specifically designated to coincide with spring break at Portland Adventist Academy.
Members of the Foreign Mission Facilitation Committee believe up to 55 persons–including a dozen from the Bend Seventh-day Adventist Church–will sign up for this mission.
Each missionary to Ethiopia will contribute to Sunnyside’s Foreign Mission Projects Fund an amount equivalent to airfare (currently $1,600+) and living expenses on the ground.
The committee prioritized plans for the mission based on reports from a seven-member advance survey team which visited Ethiopia earlier this year.
The Sunnyside Church Board will consider the Ethiopia mission project at its meeting next Wednesday evening.
The organizational structure of the Ethiopia mission looks like this:
* Mission Project Director: Ted Mackett, M.D.
* Construction Team Leader: Ray Betz.
* Women’s and Children’s Ministries Team Leaders: Marion Betz, Pauline Davis, Kathy Pruitt.
* Medical-Dental-Nursing Team Leaders: Ted Mackett, Arnold Petersen, Kathy Pruitt.
* Church Services-Evangelism-Camp Meetings-Community Outreach Team Leaders: Jonathan Russell, Deffo Mebrat, Martha Zeleke.
* In-country Logistics Coordinator: Deffo Mebrat.
* International Travel Coordinator: Dick Fenn.
The 2015 Ethiopia mission would be Sunnyside’s second to the land of the queen of Sheba and a continuation of the congregation’s longtime interest in international outreach. In years past Sunnyside has sent teams to sites in nations such as Brazil, Mongolia, Tanzania, Zambia, Belize, and Romania.
