Dear Sunnyside Church Family,
By now, many of you have heard of the ALS #IceBucketChallenge. It all started when one guy in Sarasota, Florida decided to dump a bucket of ice on his head and post it on YouTube. With it came a challenge to three friends to dump the ice on their heads or donate to the ALS Association. (Link to the first #IceBucketChallenge). Since then, hundreds of thousands of people have dumped ice cold water over their heads and/or donated to the fight against Lou Gehrig’s Disease. In 39 days of this phenomenon, the ALS Association (alsa.org) has raised $53.3 million. That’s about 3 times the amount the Association raised in 2013. What we’ve seen is a cultural phenomenon, a social experience in which seemingly everyone is excited about the same thing.
And it all started with one person.
The Bible’s game plan for sharing faith and calling people toward a life in Jesus isn’t that different. Jesus invited his disciples, just twelve guys to start with, to share the story of the Redeemer with one person. And then another. And then another. It was the original social media. To be fair, falling in love with Jesus requires more than 25 seconds and a bucket of ice on YouTube. In fact, the discipleship process takes time, personal investment and care as a person learns to journey with Jesus. As such, we wouldn’t expect hundreds of thousands of people to become Jesus’ followers in 39 days.
But it still starts with one person.
It starts with you and me, unafraid to share the story of Jesus when the Spirit moves us to do so. Unafraid to share why we have hope and faith. Unafraid to engage in life with other people who don’t share the faith we have.
We each have the opportunity to inspire a community, one life at at time. My prayer for our Sunnyside community is that we will take the opportunity to share faith, hope, and the story of Jesus with someone we know in the near future. Uncomfortable? Maybe so. But so is a bucket of ice water. And the cause we stand for has eternal implications.
Hope to see many of you tomorrow as we worship our God together.
