December 5 Communiqué

Don’t miss other Announcements  &  Week At a Glance in the Church Bulletin (Click here)

Greetings Church Family!

This week, I had the opportunity to have breakfast with Pastor Terry Johnsson. Many of you know him from his growing-up years in Portland.  Recently, he has become the executive director of Mission Integration at Adventist Medical Center. As we shared a meal, we began dreaming about how we could partner together to make a spiritual impact on our community. Our proximity gives us a natural opportunity to work together within our strengths to serve our community more effectively. While our dreams are still in infancy, the Lord has opened doors for a meaningful partnership between AMC, Sunnyside, and a handful of other Adventist churches. The opportunity is being called First Friday. On the first Friday of every month, the hospital amphitheaters will be opened for a Friday night worship experience. The events will be community focused, designed to encourage people to “get back to” spiritual community. As part of our partnership, Sunnyside has agreed to host (at AMC) and coordinate two First Friday events in 2016. We believe that this will be the beginning of a fruitful relationship in which we serve our community together for the sake of the gospel. First Friday begins tonight (Dec. 4) with a special concert by Gresham’s own vocal sensation, RESCUE.  Their unique style of worship and praise is sure to inspire and encourage this community. The program starts at 7 PM and it would be great if we would turn out in force to worship and connect together.

I’m reminded that anywhere we go, we each are individually ambassadors of Sunnyside and, more importantly, ambassadors of our Savior. In the ways that we interact, in the conversations that we have, in the values that we demonstrate, we are ambassadors. Thank you for living in such a way that people see the Savior through you.

Tomorrow will be a great day at Sunnyside as we experience Pastor Colby’s second sermon in this church. I know he has been praying and working hard over this message and we all stand to benefit from his effort. I’ll look forward to seeing many of you tomorrow as we worship, connect, and enjoy potluck together.

Pastor Jonathan

Pathfinders and Adventurers worked very hard before Thanksgiving! It started on a rainy afternoon October 31. After church Pathfinders went door to door collecting non-perishable food items. By the end of the day, they were tired and soaked! On Friday, November 20, a group of 22 went to the Union Gospel Mission and helped put together 500 food boxes, then brought 55 of those boxes back to Sunnyside. The following Saturday night, after hiking for almost 10 miles, a group of Pathfinders and staff went shopping for extra food needed to complement the food boxes. Pathfinders and Adventurers were back at church early Sunday morning to sort, put together, and deliver 55 food boxes to families in need.

We are thankful that our God continues to use our youth to bless those in need. We could not have done it without our church family’s support and donations. Thank you, Adventurers and Pathfinders, for your hard work and thank you, Sunnyside, for supporting our youth!

Sunnyside Pathfinders spent three hours baking cookies last Saturday evening in preparation for our “Carols & Cookies” outreach this Sabbath afternoon, December 5. The Pathfinders will be at The Village Retirement Center in Gresham at 2:30 pm to join the residents in singing Christmas carols. Some of our Pathfinders have been practicing the chimes especially for this event and Karl Helton has kindly offered to accompany us on the piano for several songs. Others will be serving the cookies and cider as we all enjoy visiting with each other after our singing.
