January 16 Communiqué

Don’t miss other Announcements  &  Week At a Glance in the Church Bulletin (Click here)

Greetings Sunnyside Family,

A few weeks ago I had the privilege of announcing that Pastor Kara Dale would be joining our staff here at Sunnyside.  It’s still true!  We look forward to having Pastor Kara join us in ministry here near the end of February.  Many people have been asking about her so I thought I’d take a few minutes this week to interview her. Due to the wonders of modern technology, we’ve been able to record the interaction for your viewing pleasure.  The video is 18 minutes long, but here are a few highlights from our interaction.  I hope you enjoy getting to know a bit more about our newest pastor.

From the interview:  Before pastoring, Pastor Kara was a high school teacher. She grew up in Papua New Guinea and Australia in a family four. She has been really enjoying serving as a pastor in the Brisbane area, but sent her résumé to Oregon Conference at the urging of her boyfriend, Terry Johnsson.  Though a native Australian, Kara has been to the United States a few times.  While she has been to Washington DC and New Orleans, Louisiana, Portland is definitely her favorite city.

A few other fun facts:

Kara likes to cook.
She enjoys playing Settlers of Catan.
She can’t wait to get to Sunnyside to get to know the people here.
She doesn’t think she’ll mind the rain in Portland.
She has seen God work personally in her life at various times.

If you want to see the entire interview, you can find it at Sunnyside’s YouTube channel.  I’m thankful that the Lord has made it clear that Pastor Kara is the right pastor to join our pastoral team here at Sunnyside.  Many have been asking how responsibilities will be divided among us.  That question hasn’t been answered yet. As we complete the staff, we will be dividing responsibilities and communicating those divisions clearly to our community.  Until then, we can praise God that we are assembling the right people for the journey.  Keep praying for Pastor Kara as she travels to join us.  And keep praying for our search committee as they seek God’s plan for the final member of our pastoral team.

I’m excited for tomorrow as Pastor Colby continues our series on “The Inspired Life.”  As he has shared parts of his study with me, I’m excited to hear the rest as he unpacks the scriptures for us on Sabbath morning.  I hope that you’ll be there.

One last thing:  If you’ve had issues connecting to the live stream recently, you’ll appreciate knowing that we converted our streaming server to one you might be familiar with: YouTube.  While we may have to work out a couple kinks in the transition process, I expect that we will have higher quality video more consistently.  Best of all, you don’t have to do anything different.  Just head to the church website and click “Live@Sunnyside” to access the video feed.

May God bless each of you as you experience the Sabbath.

Pastor Jonathan

America’s next president will, on Jan. 20, 2017, take the oath of office “to defend the Constitution . . . against all enemies, foreign and domestic.” The president’s pledge to defend the Constitution is a pledge to protect your religious freedom and mine. Note: The Constitution does not provide religious freedom; it guarantees a natural right. So it behooves us Adventists to watch for any and all encroachments on this right, to inveigh against such, and then to live blamelessly as witnesses to the spiritual freedom God’s grace guarantees.

Here’s one way to witness effectively: Support the annual offering for religious liberty to be received next Sabbath, January 23. The dollars we donate distribute Liberty magazine to America’s thought leaders who are thus persuaded to join us and the president in defending the Constitution–the Constitution which guarantees us the right to go, to preach and teach, to heal and build. If that sounds like mission at Sunnyside, you are tuned in!

ETHIOPIA 2016 launches in 60 days–March 16. Sunnyside’s team of 33 persons–including Lead Pastor Jonathan Russell and Head Elder Arnold Petersen, M.D.–will build (a foundation for a new church in Nagele), heal (through health education and basic clinical services), teach (seminars for local pastors and church officers), and preach (a 10-day evangelistic series). Mission activity doesn’t come free. Our mission objective in dollars: $30,000. Direct your gift to Fund 806 for ETHIOPIA 2016. You are free to do so!  /  RLF

Sunnyside Youth, ages 15+, will be involved in a mission trip to Los Angeles during Spring Break, March 18-27. The Dream Center was founded twenty years ago with a compelling vision to impact all of Los Angeles by addressing people’s physical, material, and spiritual needs in unique and practical ways, The Dream Center has grown into a phenomenon that now reaches more than thirty thousand people each week through its multiple church services and more than two hundred need-centered ministries. We will be driving a bus to Los Angeles and some of the activities we may be involved in are: adopt-a-block, construction, discipleship, food bank, food truck, kitchen, His hands extended, kid’s ministry, family floor, and foster care intervention. Come prepared to share Jesus in practical ways. For further information and to register, contact Pastor Colby at Colby.Maier@SunnysideAdventist.org or call 503-334-8095.
