April 2 Communiqué

Don’t miss other Announcements  &  Week At a Glance in the Church Bulletin (Click here)

Dear Church family & friends,

Our Church exists for those who are not yet followers of Jesus. That’s it. That is why we go on. That is why we exist. This spring Sunnyside saw a number of missionary teams go across the globe, each with the intent of spreading the Gospel and seeing people give their hearts over to Jesus. With teams travelling to Romania, Ethiopia, and even Los Angeles the gospel ministry was furthered. However, while all this is exciting and even beneficial we must never forget that our mission must not be only global but more significantly it must always be local. Let us not overlook the importance, even the commandment, to spread the love of God right here in our local community, in the city of Portland.

In the Acts of the Apostles, Jesus spoke to His disciples saying “but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Sometimes I am convinced we have this equation backwards and moreover, even unfinished. Assuming that our local regions have been saturated with the Gospel, we start with the farthest realms and slowly work our way to the inside, rather than starting with the inner communities and working our way out. As you can imagine, this type of evangelism is contradicting the commandment and hindering its effectiveness. But when the Gospel’s starting point is in our municipality, our very own city of Portland, a phenomenal exchange happens. As we begin to witness to others “in” here, and see people encounter Jesus in Portland, we gain the momentum to witness to others out there, to the ends of the earth.

Yes, may Sunnyside be ever so a missional community, but may our mission never lose sight of the right equation and proper vision. If we are faithful in the small things, He will enable us to be faithful in the bigger things. Jesus said, “whoever is faithful with very little will also be faithful with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.” Therefore, if Sunnyside is faithful right here in Portland, we will also be faithful to the ends of the earth – by the grace of Jesus.

Your brother in Christ,

Pastor Colby
