Greetings Church Family,
It seems like forever since I last wrote a message to the church. Since you’ve last heard from me, I’ve been blessed to travel with 30-something people to Ethiopia to connect with local Adventists and inspire the community of faith. For two weeks, we experienced a flurry of activity as Sunnysiders (and friends) served in medical clinics, oversaw construction, taught sewing, and played with local children. We saw hippos, ostriches and museums. We experienced health and illness, joy and heartache, energy and exhaustion. As with most any mission experience, it didn’t go as planned. And yet we saw God at work. When the rain fell so loudly on the church’s metal roof that preaching was impossible, God was still at work as we sang and prayed at the top of our lungs. When the crowds pressed in at the clinic doors demanding to be seen, God was at work to help calmer spirits prevail and allow the sickest to get through. When missionaries were pressed at every side by children expecting a gift, God was at work to share the stories of His presence. Too many things happened to recount them all. But there is one enduring truth: In every circumstance, God was at work. I’m thankful for the moments of intense mission focus because it reminds us what Scripture consistently teaches: God is consistently at work on this planet for the redemption of humanity. It’s a message that rang true for two weeks in Ethiopia and it’s a message the rings true in Portland today. God invites us to be on mission for Him wherever we are. He invites us to participate in His effort to redeem humanity. I’m glad to be a part of the Sunnyside family where we accept the call to make a difference in other parts of the world, and right here at home.
I’ll be excited to share in worship with many of you tomorrow at Sunnyside. Tomorrow, we begin a sermon series entitled, “The Transformed Life.” Over the coming weeks, we will be delving into the teachings of Scripture to understand God’s plan for changing the lives of human beings. I heard someone say this week, “God loves you just the way you are, and He doesn’t want to leave you that way.” In the coming weeks, we will explore the transformation in the lives of believers and seek to understand God’s plan for us and our community. I hope to see you tomorrow to begin the journey.
