Dear Church Family,
This past week I was blessed to share in FaithLift’s study of Colossians. There Paul concludes his letter with the counsel to “let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone” (Col 4:6). It is quite amazing how much counsel the Bible has in regards to our words – both Old Testament and New. Proverbs states the case in no uncertain terms: “death and life are in the power of the tongue” (Proverbs 18:21). And it made me pause and consider, how much life is imparted by my words? And sadly, how often do my words fail to impart life?
I personally found Paul’s analogy of salt as a seasoning in regards to my conversation, as both challenging and beautiful. Salt can be used in many ways; in larger doses it can be both a preserving agent and antiseptic. But when used as a seasoning, it enhances flavors already present. In fact, if you try to add more and more salt in order to combat unwanted flavors, the results are unpalatable! Salt as a seasoning can only enhance flavors already present and it must be used carefully.
I know that the people who have had the greatest impact in my life, are those that used their words to lift me up, affirming God’s work in my life, celebrating the good. And I am challenged to do the same. In a world where criticism often takes sway, may our words highlight God’s active presence in people’s lives, lifting them up, affirming the good, conversation full of grace, seasoned with salt.
Looking forward to worshipping with you tomorrow,
