April 23 Communiqué

Don’t miss other Announcements  &  Week At a Glance in the Church Bulletin (Click here)

Dear Church Family,

Sunnyside is a church community on mission. It’s easy to see when we send small teams of people across the world to serve the needs of the third world for two or three weeks.  It’s less obvious when a small group faithfully prepares meals week in and week out for hungry and overburdened college students.  Or when one or two people spend countless volunteer hours setting up chairs and tables for the endless study groups, ministry teams, and committees that happen in the life of Sunnyside.

This past week, our church board took a major concrete step toward more effective mission and ministry in our local community.  On August 26, 2016, the Adventist Medical Evangelism Network will set up shop at Portland Adventist Academy to provide free dental and vision care to the underprivileged of Portland.  Last Wednesday, Sunnyside officially signed on as a sponsor for the event.  We will partner with Adventist Medical Center and many Adventist churches in Portland to bring this vital service to our neighbors. In addition to committing local mission funding to this event, we took on the task of recruiting many volunteers to help make the weekend a success.  Before long, you’ll hear much more about the details of this event.  But for now, I affirm our board for taking the call of missions seriously and taking concrete steps to reach our neighborhood.  We fully intend that this will be the beginning of a fruitful relationship with AMC as we partner in various ways to bring hope and healing to Southeast Portland.

It is the fulfillment of our mission to inspire a community toward a life transformed by Jesus. And it’s one aspect of the vision we have identified to “be connected with our surrounding community.”  Wherever He went, Jesus had a reputation as one who would bring healing and hope to everyone He met.  May we develop the same reputation in this community.  Plan now to volunteer on August 26 and 28 as we work together to bring healing to our neighbors.

Pastor Jonathan

Update: As many of your know the Family Resource Network has been assisting Alex Buchanan with his recovery from the bicycle accident which left him paralyzed. Alex has been working hard to regain his motor skills. Some of his accomplishments include:

  • An increase range of motion in the hamstrings and ankles
  • Significant increases in shoulder structural integrity allowing him to sit independently with arms extended behind him
  • Increased function of his core – he can maintain balance for 15 seconds
  • Increased shoulder strength and endurance that enables him to lie on his stomach propped up on his elbows for an extended amount of time
  • Significant reduction in blood pressure issues

We are proud of Alex and his progress and we pray for God’s continued blessing as he continues to regain strength and motion.
