Dear Sunnyside Family,
I grew up in a little town in central Missouri. The town had around 10,000 residents. “Downtown” consisted of a few blocks of “mom & pop” shops. The big attractions in town were high school football and the junior college basketball team. The Adventist church had just over 100 members. For us, it was clear that “church” meant the people. We met for Sabbath in the gymnasium of the school building that the church members built because they wanted to be sure their kids had Christian education. Maybe I look back on it with the rose-colored glasses of a 10-year-old. Or maybe it was a different time.
Back then, there were two things that kept us together as a church family: working together and worshipping together. The church members built that school a brick at a time together. We participated together in ingathering and evangelism. And we worshipped together in the gym with the concrete floor and the uncomfortable metal folding chairs. But the work and worship held the church together.
And the more things change, the more things stay the same. Even now, work and worship hold a church family together. That’s why I’m excited that this weekend, we get to experience both.
Friday night begins our revival series with Lee Venden. Lee is arriving today (Thursday) and preparing to inspire us with his love for Jesus. Tomorrow, “All About Jesus” will continue with different presentations at 8:45 and 11:15 am. IF ever there were a time to attend both worship services, this Sabbath is it! You won’t be disappointed. The series will continue each evening between now and next Sabbath. Most nights, there will be some food available. Check the website, www.SunnysideAdventist.org, for the details. We’ve done our best to create some great options that minimize the work for our volunteers and are affordable for each of us.
On Sunday morning, we will need the help of a few dozen people to prepare the children’s divisions for carpet-laying next week. We’ll start early by removing all of chairs and props from each classroom, then remove the carpet so that everything is ready for Monday. We could use up to 75 people, so I hope that many will choose to join. As they say, many hands make light work.
I hope you’ll join in wherever you can as we work and worship together this weekend. God continues to lead our church family forward into His plan. And I can’t wait to see how it turns out.
See you Friday night for a light supper and the opening meeting of “All About Jesus.”
