As I was reading again Jesus’ words to his disciples as he sent them out to share the good news of salvation, his message of courage stood out to me. There is a boldness that he calls them to – not in and of itself, but in the context of their relationship with him. Though the world they faced was thwart with its own terror and uncertainty, he called them to courage; do not fear those who can kill the body, rather, know your value in God, rest in the assurance that his knowledge of and presence with you, is complete (Matthew 10). Love and fear do not dwell well together; one will cancel the other out, whichever is fed, will rule.
As we face more and more turmoil in our society, including the threat of terror attacks, let us not give in to fear, to suspicion and self-preservation. Rather, let us press in to our God who went before us, choosing to love rather than hate, and laying down his life, rather than seeking to preserve it. As we allow ourselves to be loved by him, fear will be starved. In this we experience true freedom, and can truly be the light and salt that we are born to be.
