As I write, I am sitting in the living room of a house belonging to one of my best friends. It is new to me but because of her presence, feels like home. I have walked the halls of my alma mater, full of rich memories and wonderful lecturers who still know my name, and again, I feel home. It has been a wonderful thing to come “home” for just a little bit. Yet as I touched the familiar of places and people, I have also been very aware, that Portland is now home to me too. There is a new familiar that I look forward to returning to.
As I child growing up, my idea of home was a permanent dwelling that would not be left, roots that found themselves in physical soil. However, I have come to experience home in the love of people, the blessings of God, the certainty of His presence with me.
There are many people who long for a place to call home, and through His church, us, God longs to provide it. May we be a place where those who are weary, can enjoy rest, where the broken can find healing and safety, the wanderers community. Sunnyside family, you are dear to my heart, you have indeed blessed me with that sense of home. It is my prayer that we continue to extend that belonging to all those God brings to us.
“I’m telling the solemn truth: Whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked or ignored, that was me – you did it to me.” Matthew 25:40, The Message.
