December 31 Communiqué

Don’t miss other Announcements  &  Week At a Glance in the Church Bulletin (Click here)

Dear Family,

As we come to the end of 2016, I want to thank you for the incredible year that it has been as a church family. You are a joy to know and lead! Thank you for sharing your lives not only with me, but with each other. That truly is what church is all about. As we look to the year ahead, we plan to build on that, to deepen those relationships, and to share that hospitality with those that God brings into our lives.

Coming up on the Sabbath of January 7, you will have the opportunity to join a Life Together Interest Group which will run for 10 weeks. These interest groups will range from restaurant appreciation, to hiking! There will be something for everyone. Not only will you have a chance of learning a new skill, but more importantly, you will be able to get to know church members that perhaps you would otherwise not have the chance of spending time with, and deepen the friendships that you already appreciate. Life is a gift. People are a gift. As we start the new year together, let’s choose to make both a priority.

Wishing you joy in 2017,

Pastor Kara Dale

giftSome may be interested in how they can give a Christmas gift to their church community. This year, our finance team has invited gifts to two priorities:  Church Budget and ReNew Sunnyside. Those who have been following budget giving this year recognize that, to this point, our local budget giving has trailed our budget by a significant margin. Our church budget is our agreement on how we wish to invest in the work of the gospel here in Portland. Our continued investment in ministry is dependent on everyone’s generosity. Thank you for considering this important ministry fund.

In addition, we are beginning the planning process for our ReNew Phase 3 project. While we don’t have final project budget numbers, we are hoping to get a good start on funding so that we can complete the work of renewing the sanctuary as soon as is reasonable.

If you’re considering a Christmas gift to your church family, please consider these two priorities.

Next Sabbath, January 7, 6:30 pm, David Shearer will present a concert here at Sunnyside in the sanctuary.

Coming to Sunnyside in January 2017: “Our Adventist Heritage.” This will be a seminar examining the origin and development of the Seventh-day Adventist church with an eye towards strengthening our faith in Jesus, our Leader. Produced by Warren Rushold, David Schmidt, and Scott LeMert. This seminar will feature a variety of presenters and presentation styles. Sessions will start Sabbath, January 21, at 4:00 pm. A full schedule will be available in mid-January.

Family Resource Network –A Thank You!  by Richard Gingrich, Chair.
It has been quite a journey God has led us on over the past six years. This experience, the intentional reaching out to the members of our church family and to our community – has not been solely the province of our committee. Most of the members of our church family that are in need don’t request help, but you are our eyes and ears bringing, the needs to our attention. It may be someone who needs help with their rent or their light bill or maybe someone who needs a new roof. Before we even know about it, there has been a group organized to do the work, but needs money for the materials. Or maybe it is a young single woman who has to drive a car to her first job and then, when the car breaks down her repair is almost $2,000. You helped these people. You helped when fire destroyed their belongings. You have helped people obtain shelter during the recent cold spell. And you have helped the refugee children receive Christmas gifts, Bibles and winter clothing.

Though the recession is over, single mothers with young children often live from pay check to pay check to cover rising rent, and the cost of child care. When such an emergency arises, they need help and, thanks to you, we have always been able to supply that need.

Thank You, Thank You. Thank You!

Romania for Christ 2017The Romanian Union plans for this project are under way. What is all about? Seminars, children ministries, evangelism, and much more. If all goes as planned,  this will be the biggest mission project ever in that part of the world. Between February 10-25, over 2,000 cities will receive God’s plan for salvation. For more information regarding how you can be a part of this effort, please contact Vasile Gramada or Arthur Tolan.

A memorial service for Bonnie Calkins (who passed away November 6) will be held Friday, January 6, 6:45 pm,  at Somerset Lodge Chapel. Refreshments will follow at Somerset Lodge Activity Room.  Bonnie was an aunt of Bruce Dixon. She was a member at Gladstone Park, but also attended  Sunnyside.

 June 24-July 1, 2017: Heritage Singers Cruise.
Heritage invites you to come along to Alaska for a week of fellowship, a lot of music, and good food in celebration of our 45th year of music and ministry. This will be the last cruise Heritage will do, so come and make history with us. Space is limited, so reserve your cabins early. All the information in this brochure link, and there is more information about the cruise on our website

Living Hope International is looking for a 27 to 30-foot Class C recreational vehicle to replace our aging truck. Using an RV rather than a newer truck would save the cost and effort of installing a generator, water reservoir, and water heater, plus it would have plenty of room to store tables, stoves, and our other equipment.  If you have an RV you rarely use and would appreciate an end-of-year tax write-off, we would LOVE to hear from you. Help us to continue in our ministry to feed Sunday morning breakfast to the homeless and food-insecure in Portland.  lease call Maurice Kivitt at 503-708-8464 or contact him by email:
