One of God’s gifts that I appreciate so much, is the Sabbath. I remember as a child, going through Friday’s preparations, looking forward to that moment when I could finally put away the vacuum cleaner and enjoy our family’s tradition of soup and buns around the dinner table. There was such relief that came with the setting of the sun!
It’s easy to take familiar things for granted, and the Sabbath can sometimes become taken for granted, especially when we have grown up with it. Lately I have been studying it again, reading Sigve K. Tonstadt’s incredible book “The Lost Meaning of the Seventh Day.” In it, he drew my attention to a facet that I had not spent much time on; the fact that humanity’s first experience was the Sabbath – not a work week leading up to a well earned rest, but a gift of life enjoyed with their Creator in celebration of all that He had done. Is this saying that work is not important? No, but what it is saying, is that it is not our primary purpose. Rather, our primary purpose is living life in relationship with our Creator. Tonstadt writes:
“Seeing that human time begins with a day of rest and not a day of work, the spiritual pursuit, living life in a relationship with the Creator that is mutually meaningful, stands out as the primary meaning of life….” Tonstadt, 37.
As always, I join Paul in the prayer that you will know more and more the love God has for you, the incredible value that you are as His child, and His power in your life.
Looking forward to seeing you all again this Sabbath,
Pastor Kara Johnsson
