Just this week, I was pulling into our driveway when three precious, small humans came bounding out the front door. “Daddy,” they shrieked, “the strawberries are almost ripe.” I emptied my hands and followed them to our little strawberry patch. Sure enough, there were a few vaguely pink berries scattered throughout the leaves. For a few precious moments together we scoured the leaves, looking for that first berry that was ripe enough to share between us. That night, we didn’t find it. But that didn’t matter. The moment of exuberant anticipation at the simple gift of fruitful agriculture was enough in that moment. For me, it was a welcome reminder of the joy God can bring at the simple things of life.
One need not look far to see the struggle, strain, and stress that life tends to bring. No matter our age or experience, the devil finds ways to needle us, distracting and discouraging us from experiencing God’s joy. Sometimes, we just need a quick reminder to stop and enjoy a strawberry.
Tonight when I get home, we’ll go check the strawberry patch again. If we’re lucky, we’ll enjoy the first fruit of the season together. That is if they haven’t eaten them all before I get there.
Here’s hoping that as you experience the sweet bliss of local strawberries this season, you’ll be reminded to live in the joy of the Lord.
See you Sabbath,
Pastor Jonathan Russell
