But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.
1 Corinthians 13:8-13
It is a simple message today. After a week of sitting in incredible classes, listening to ideas that stretch my mind, one particular professor brought it home with 1 Corinthians 13. She shared how so much has changed over the years, and with all that change, we are assured that more will come. Not just technological change either, but our understanding of the world, of who we are and even our understanding of God.
In the pursuit of understanding we are both cautioned and encouraged, that for all the certainty we may feel on any particular topic or issue, we still do not see the full picture, we only see in part. And the strategy of walking in the tension of partial understanding, partial sight, is to come back to love. Faith hope and love, but the most important, the one that will hold us sure in all our decisions, is love. When in doubt, love.
Looking forward to seeing you and sharing with you this Sabbath,
