Greetings Family,

This morning as I was reading about Elijah and the Widow of Zarephath (1 Kings 17:7), I was reminded again of God’s faithfulness, the heart of a father. So often we can fall into the role of servant, looking up toward the heavens in a transactional mindset, wondering if we have done enough to receive a blessing from Him. Our circumstances can be such that we are too busy to even look up, scrounging around our “houses” searching for “flour and olive oil” that appear to be running out. When people ask us to share, like the widow, we hesitate, wondering if there will be enough to go around. And our Father patiently lifts our eyes, and reminds us once again that we are His children, that He wants to be our provider (Matthew 6:25), and that He gives good gifts to us (Matthew 7:9-11).

It has been called the Theology of Abundance. The understanding that God is for us, He is our provider, and because of that, we don’t have to worry, we don’t have to hoard, we can be generous. And this is not just physical generosity – it encompasses our whole outlook. It means we are not threatened by other’s successes, instead we celebrate them, giving them a space to shine, secure in the knowledge that both the “oil and flour” are sure – for them and us.

In Him,

Pastor Kara Johnsson

Send your “shout-outs” to info@SunnysideAdventist.org so we can include them in next week’s Communiqué. This is a place you can recognize someone for doing good, or going beyond expectations.

Shout out to the Sunnyside team members who put together an amazing Sabbath program for the Gladstone Camp Meeting. Thank you for all your time and dedicated work! It was a very inspirational program.

Church Announcements

First Friday, August 4, 7:15 pm, will meet in the lower level amphitheaters of Adventist Medical Center. This is a time of music and spiritual fellowship. This month it is sponsored by Sunnyside Church. If you will remember, a few months ago, we were praying for a little boy named Owen who had a traumatic head injury. We will hear his full story at First Friday. Sunnyside will be presenting the music, and Laura and Andy Monahan will be presenting our spiritual emphasis talk. Come and join us – all are welcome. Also, there will be a soup and salad dinner from 5:30 to 6:30 pm. Each individual must register separately. Use this link to register by August 2: https://www.adventisthealth.org/nw/event/first-friday-soup-and-salad-dinner.

Our monthly fellowship potluck will be next week. Plan to attend and bring enough food for your family as well as extra to serve our guests. This is a great time to visit with friends and make new acquaintances.

Volunteers are needed! Please see Cris Marin in the Narthex to sign up. Bring your children (ages 3-11), your neighbors’ children, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren for a VBS weekend of learning about God. All are welcome.

Our annual corn feed and classic car show will immediately follow the last session of VBS, at  3:00 pm. Sunday, August 27. Mark the date, and plan to enjoy roasted corn on the cob, watermelon, and a classic car show. For more information or to enter your vehicle contact Lloyd Wescott 503-252-0165.

Family Resource Network – Thank you for your continued support that has helped so many people in their time of need. Place your funds in an envelope marked Family Resource Network, account number 488. Current Need: Wheelchair, walker, and newborn clothes for a baby boy. Contact: Marie 503-998-3754.

Handbells for everyone—yes, for you, too!  In September we will begin two handbell/ handchime choirs:  a 3-octave team for those fairly new to handbells and handchimes, and the 5-octave team for the more experienced ringers. We have 18 ringers who have made the commitment so far. We still need 1 or 2 more for the 3-octave team, and 3 or 4 more for the 5-octave team.  Working together in a team is a wonderful way to make friends in a larger church setting.  It also provides a very rewarding experience making music together in praise to God through music. Explore the possibilities by calling Rosemayne at 503-730-5317.
