Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (NAS).
One of the many reasons that I love Portland, is our beautiful Willamette River and all the bridges that cross it. Each is quite distinct in its own style but all two things in common; their surfaces are nearly always a hive of busyness with cars, people and bicycles coming and going while their foundations are strong, reaching deep into the water and beyond. It makes me think about our lives, so often a hive of busyness themselves, so many demands, so many responsibilities, so many things we want and need to do. And in all of that, there is the risk of allowing all our focus and energy to be sucked to the “surface,” giving no time for our foundations to reach deep into the water of life.
The Apostle Paul speaks of this in 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 as he describes our journey as an intentional race. As someone preparing for a race, there is intentionality in when and where he trains, as well as taking time to be healthy. I think of our own lives of ministry, and it’s tempting to take on everything that comes our way, but as the body of Christ, we are actually called to share in ministry, allowing everyone to do their part. This not only shares the blessing that comes from serving, but also gives us the endurance to make it to the end.
As a family, let us be intentional in growing our roots deep.

As a church family, we are blessed to worship and serve together as the body of Christ at Sunnyside. One way the ministry at Sunnyside is made possible is by the generous support of Sunnyside Partners who consistently contribute to our general fund. As part of our Sunnyside Partners campaign, we encourage each person in the Sunnyside family to direct part of their offering toward our general fund. If you have not yet signed a banner to show your support for local ministry, we invite you to find one in the hallway and to do so. With each person investing in local ministry, we will able to continue the ministry to which God calls us.

The results have been a tremendous blessing over the last eight years!
