Dear Church Family,

As I sit here this morning, I can see Mt St Helen’s in the distance, a beautiful snow-capped mountain, so solid; a familiar site that I have seen most mornings since arriving in this stunning country. It was only a couple of weeks ago that we took a drive up her grand foothills, stopping to take a tour through the visitor’s center. There we were able to watch the dramatic explosion that rocked this area of the world well over thirty years ago. It’s hard to imagine that kind of event happening as I look at it now; it seems to calm, so present, so strong.

I am reminded of David’s counsel in Psalm 121:

I lift up my eyes to the mountains –
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
Psalms 121:1-2

We all have mountains in our lives, things or people that we can be tempted to place our trust in, to rely on for help. They seem so strong, so visible, so present. But like Mt. St. Helen’s they are part of God’s creation, not God himself. They are blessings in our lives but cannot carry the weight of being God – our source of strength and help.

Father, thank you for being our ever-present help in trouble, a God who does not slumber, who holds us by the hand, so that even when we stumble, we don’t fall. As we come to the end of another week, we again take time to remember that you are truly God, that we can rest in you. (Psalm 46, 121, 37)

Pastor Kara Johnsson
