Greetings Church Family,

Last Sabbath I got to spend the day with our Pathfinders exploring Mt. St. Helens. Throughout the day, we explored the devastating effects of the 1980 eruption. At the Johnston Ridge Observatory, pathfinders learned of landslides, blast zones, and mudflows. They saw the effects on the landscape, the trees, the wildlife. They saw pictures of the monochrome moonscape that was the result of the disaster.

Around the campfire that night, I asked the kids what their study had taught them about who God is. One noted, “I was amazed at how God made nature to recover so beautifully.” They had noticed that where there used to be desolation, beauty has sprung again. Through the work of groundhogs churning the soil, the migration of elk and the power of their scat, and many other natural processes, the beauty of Mt. St. Helens is slowly being restored.

It’s true: out of the desolate tragedy of explosive destruction, something beautiful is emerging. It’s such an important lesson for us to remember. Our God is a God of grace.  e’s a God of re-creation. God sees the broken pieces, the hidden trials, the profound challenges of human life. Then in the soil of that pain, he plants the seeds of hope that will mature into beauty.

Today, I’m thankful that our God is one who revels in re-creation. Because that means there’s still hope for me.

May God grant each of us a beautiful Sabbath blessing as we seek his presence this weekend.

Blessings,

Pastor Jonathan Russell
