Greetings church family,
As I am writing this there are a lot of gifts being given, cards being written up, plans being made for the evening and people dressed in red. By the time you read this, another Valentine’s Day will have come and gone. It is a day when a lot of money gets spent to show others how much love we have for them. This year it is estimated that Americans will spend a near record high of $19.6 billion dollars on this holiday. The only year that has been higher, since they began tracking this information 15 years ago, was 2016 during which Americans spent $19.7 billion dollars. What does all that money get spent on? The top five most given gifts on Valentine’s Day (allowing for multiple gifts) are cards (52% – 85% purchased by women) followed by candy (47.5%), dining/eating out (35%), flowers (34% – 73% purchased by men) and jewelry (17%). So how much money did you add to that total? What kind of things did you get for your loved ones?
Maybe some of you were part of the crowd that refuses to participate in this holiday. I have heard a wide range of reasons why some don’t participate. Some have claimed that it is simply a “made up” holiday. The confectioners and publishing companies came up with an excuse to make us buy more candy and cards and thus increase their profitability. There have been others who refuse to participate in the festivities of the day and they reference the history and origins of the day. They reference names that most of us have never heard and traditions we don’t know while connecting them to some of the current items or things people do. If you don’t celebrate the day, that is your prerogative. I don’t believe that you need to celebrate Valentine’s day, but I do believe that you should always celebrate love. God puts great emphasis on love and the Bible describes Him as being love. First John 4:8 says, “But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love.”
God is love and He has shown us love in action. If you want to know what God would do, all you have to do is look at what Jesus did. When asked by Philip to show the disciples the Father, Jesus replied, “Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father.” If you want to know what “God is love” means in action, all you have to do is look at what Jesus did. Jesus never failed to celebrate and exhibit love in His interactions with people. So whether you choose to do it on a day in February or not, one thing is sure, we must celebrate and exhibit love. My challenge to you is don’t just show love one day out of the year but show it every day. We must show love consistently and persistently. We could have all sorts of gifts and talents, but if we don’t show love we are missing the point of the gospel of Jesus. The Bible puts it this way, “If I have the gift of prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.” (1 Corinthians 13:2). So as you continue to go through the rest of this year don’t forget to show love consistently and persistently every day.
Blessings to you and yours,
Pastor Juan Fresse
