Greetings family,

Luke 5:1-11:

Tired. Defeated. There was possibly even a little fear nibbling at the edges of their hearts. These were seasoned fishermen and they had been up all night fishing a lake that they knew well. Yet, they are back on the shore with nothing to show and no guarantee that the next night would be better. There is a preacher just down from them, but they are too tired to listen. The little energy that they have left is focused on getting their nets cleaned — an arduous process at the best of times – and returning home for sleep’s welcome reprieve.

It is into this scenario that Jesus steps in, initially just asking to use their boat, but then suggesting they go back out and throw their nets in again. This is not a nice idea to a group of men who are tired, hungry, and who had just spent the last hour or so cleaning those nets! But suggest He did, and they have a choice: take Him at his word or go to bed. We don’t know what triggered their response – was it something they heard Him say as He was preaching from their boat? Perhaps it was sheer desperation for a break in their financial situation. Whatever the case was, they took Him at His word and were blessed. In such a way that overwhelmed their boats!

The path that He calls us to, is not always easy. Sometimes there does not seem to be a clear path ahead. Sometimes it feels like He is asking us to throw our newly cleaned nets into water that we are certain has no fish, yet we are presented with the same choice. Take Him at his word, or get some sleep. Different stories but the same choice, the same God.

In Him,

Pastor Kara Johnsson
