Dear Family,

I confess that today as I write to you, I do so with a sense of anticipation and excitement because in just over a week’s time, I am flying to Australia. I will be doing a week of speaking at Sydney Adventist Hospital for their Week of Spiritual Emphasis and then spending a week with my Mom in Melbourne. It has been nearly two years since I touched Australian soil, ate Weetbix and hung out with the Kangaroos and Koalas! But when Terry asked me last night what I was looking forward to the most, I reflected that it was really the people that I was most excited about. To be able to sit down face to face with my Mom, to be able to hug and laugh with old friends; people are the treasure of life.

And as I reflect on our church here at Sunnyside, there are lots of things that keep us busy, that need our time and attention, that sometimes even give us stress! But in all of that, the real treasure of our church are its people – you. The building is amazing, the programs are lovely, but it is our people that makes it church, that makes it family. Thank you for choosing to be a part of our church family, for choosing to show up and encourage each other, for choosing to care and support each other.

Looking forward to seeing you this Sabbath as we reflect on the last chapter of Jonah.

In Him,

Pastor Kara Johnsson

Send your “shout-outs”
to info@SunnysideAdventist.org so we can include them in next week’s Communiqué. This is a place you can recognize someone for doing good, or going beyond expectations.

Shout out to Dr. Rick Westermeyer for the beautiful landscape, especially the newly finished front Northwest corner of our parking lot. Nice job!

Shout out to Cris Marin for being the unsung hero of our Children’s Ministries! He is always planning, checking, and filling in where needed. Thank you, Cris.

On May 23, Portland Adventist Academy will hold our 9th Inside Out Service Day to blanket the city of Portland in service and ministry. Parents, pastors, and church members are a vital resource for this event. Here are three ways you can help.

  1. Nominate an organization we can partner with or support in ministry or service. Do you volunteer at a food bank? Do you work for a non-profit organization? How can we help these services and who can we contact?
  2. Help us financially. From T-shirts to sunscreen, water, snacks, work supplies and more, your financial support makes this day a success.
  3. Join the adventure! We begin the day with worship at 8:30. You’ll spend quality time with PAA students and teachers doing work that really makes a difference. We need drivers, supervisors, and sometimes unique skill sets. If you have an expertise, like landscaping, building maintenance, or are just great with people, your skills will help! We’ll be back to campus before 3:30 pm. All volunteers must complete a background check (available on our website: http://www.paasda.org.

Please email Pastor Monte (mtorkelsen@paasda.org) to volunteer, donate, or nominate an organization.
