Dear Family,

Thank you for so many encouraging words that you have sent me as I spend time at home with Mom. You are a gracious and thoughtful church family and I appreciate you so much.

As I write, I am looking out at the Yarra Valley Mountains and listening to a myriad of Sulphur Crested Cockatoos asking for dinner! They come morning and night, always hungry and a beautiful sight to see. They are a large, regal looking bird,

full of character and with beautiful yellow crests. As stunning as they all are, however, they do not have my attention this evening. Rather, an old fellow, sitting a-ways away with no crest left, and many other feathers also missing, has my attention. Life seems to have beaten him up and he no longer appears to have a place in the flock. An outcast, he looks

on, hoping for an opportunity to grab some food. As brilliant as the others are, so full of life, so stunning to look at, it is this little fellow – Scrappy – who my heart goes out to. I do what I can for him, getting an extra spoon of seed and putting it on the ground near him so that he can feed uninterrupted.

It made me think of Jesus’ words to us (Matthew 10:29) in describing the Father’s heart; even birds such as Scrappy have His care and attention. Sometimes life can take quite a few of our feathers out of us – we can feel beaten up, alone, outside of the group, very vulnerable. It seems like we no longer have anything going for us; our beautiful crests have been pulled out and we feel ugly and bereft. But our Father sees. He understands. He has a soft spot for the “Scrappy’s” and He promises to provide.

See you in just over a week,

In Him,

Pastor Kara Johnsson
