I hope you have been able to stay cool during our heatwave this past week! In some ways, it reminded me of my Australian home, but I have to confess that I had moments when I wished its intensity away!
We humans are often like that; we spend so much time wishing for something other than what is. When it is cold, we are pining away for the sun. Then the sun appears, and we want it cool again! Perhaps we have a few issues of control, perhaps…
As I read the stories of Yahweh in the Old Testament, I pause at God’s description of himself: I AM WHO I AM. Present, so present, but giving no room for humanity to control, box, or completely define him – though we continually try!
The idea of being able to define our God gives a temporal feeling of security. Just like the idea of being able to control our own salvation – there is an illusion of security there. But I am so thankful for a God who is so much bigger than me, whose reality defies definition.
In the words of Paul:
Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God!
How unsearchable his judgments,
and his paths beyond tracing out!
“Who has known the mind of the Lord?
Or who has been his counselor?”
“Who has ever given to God,
that God should repay them?”
For from him and through him and for him are all things.
To him be the glory forever! Amen.
In our hurried pursuit of control, may we pause for rest in the mystery of God.
Pastor Kara Johnsson
