“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. ‘Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!’”
Last Sunday Terry and I spent the day on the coast in celebration of another year of life. It had been a while since we had visited – too long! And we had a fantastic time. There is something incredibly soul-soothing about waking up to the sound of waves breaking over rocks and sand. This trip was particularly special as we took a boat out to watch the whales surfacing at Depoe Bay; I had not seen whales quite that close before and it was pretty amazing to witness their grandeur so close. However, as incredible as those whales were, it was a creature far less grand, that captured our attention that day.
We had stayed over night in Lincoln City, and in the morning, woke to a tapping on the balcony’s sliding door! Getting up to check what was going on, I found an old, but rather large, sea gull standing there, tapping with his beak on the glass. I didn’t have anything with me to give him, and thought he would just go away after a few minutes. No such thing! He kept tapping! So much so, that I was compelled to go all the way up to the office where breakfast was being served, and get him some food!
There is power in the simple and seemingly humble act of asking – more than we often think.

Handbells for everyone—yes, and for you, too! Not just listening, but ringing as well. In mid-September rehearsals for two handbell choirs will begin again – a 3-octave team for those fairly new to handbells, and a 5-octave team for more experienced ringers. We still need more ringers for the 3-octave choir. Working together as a team provides a very rewarding experience making music together to share with others. Invite 2 or 3 of your friends to try something new along with you. Explore the possibilities by calling Rosemayne at 503-730-5317.
