Greetings Church Family,

This past week I was at Portland Adventist Academy for chapel.  I enjoy going over there every week for chapel which usually occurs on Tuesdays from 12:30 – 1:30 pm. This past chapel the presenter, a parent of one of the students, was a guest lecturer brought in to share her experiences and those of her family to educate the students on the history of the African-Americans in our community. This was done because February is black history month. It was interesting to hear how even in her lifetime she and her family had to break down barriers.

This made me think about what Pastor Mark has been talking about in church lately. Pastor Mark has been talking about the fact that we should “make room for everyone to sit at the table.” This lady and some others she knows have not always been given the opportunity to “sit” at the table with everyone else. At times I have had conversations with my children about the difficulties that people of different ethnicities have had in our country. Even in the lifetimes of some of our own Sunnyside members, there were times when my marriage to my wife would have been frowned upon by many. There were some who did not want everyone to have a seat at the table.

I want to join Pastor Mark in challenging us as a community of faith to not fall into this same historical pattern. Jesus summarized the commandments in two ways. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and love your neighbor as yourself. Loving our neighbor as ourselves requires us to make room at the table for all God’s children. It does not mean that we condone anyone’s sins but just that we love everyone just like Jesus does. Let us love each other regardless of ethnic background, socioeconomic status, skin color, sexual orientation or any other thing that might divide us as children of God.

Blessings to you and yours,

Pastor Juan Fresse
