I was one year into serving a church when it happened. A disaster. A child had lost their life in the blink of an eye. One minute they were on their bicycle, the next minute the bicycle was bent, a car bumper was stained and a life was lost. I’ll never forget it. The phone call I received was from a friend of the family. “Pastor, there’s been an accident. Johnny is dead.” They gave me the family’s name. It was just a few hours after the accident that I received the news. I jumped into my vehicle to drive to the home of the grieving family. What I saw when I got there was one of the biggest blessings I’ve ever experienced in my 34 years of ministry. Church members were stationed on the front walk, screening all that wanted to come in and see the wounded family. As I entered the house, several other church members were surrounding the family, weeping with them, mourning with them, comforting them. I listened as the church planned on who would stay the night with the young family, who would arrange for food, who would deal with arranging a service…the list went on. I saw the church surrounding this family and touching them with the love of Jesus.
As we continue our series called The Life and Times of Jesus here at Sunnyside, we will be stepping into the Sermon on the Mount. Pastor Kara is going to lead us this week into Jesus’ opening statements from this epic sermon. The Beatitudes lays the foundation for what the New Community, the Kingdom of God is to look like here on this earth. Blessings on us all as we live the truths of Jesus, as He commanded them on the side of that blessed mountain.
